'This humble little book shows you a science-based pathway through your depression, one healthy step at a time. It asks you to end the ceaseless debates inside your head and instead to learn how to focus on what works, learning and then practising small skills of openness, awareness, and values-based action over and over until they settle in as a new habit of living. If you are tired of waiting for your life to start, pick up this little workbook and begin.' Steven C. Hayes, originator and co-developer of Acceptance and Commitment Therapy Foundation Professor of Psychology, University of Nevada, Reno Depression affects some 300 million people in the world today and some 1 billion will experience an episode in their lifetime. The Little Depression Workbook provides clear evidence-based guidance and practical skills that can help people recover from depression. More than this, it is written with compassion, inspiration and a sense of common humanity; antidotes to the isolation, low motivation and self-doubt that cruelly act as barriers to recovery. Depression is a journey not just out of darkness, but also into the light. This book provides a route map for living life well with and beyond depression. Willem Kuyken, Ritblat Professor of Mindfulness and Psychological Science, University of Oxford 'A simple and practical guide to overcoming depression through Acceptance and Commitment Therapy. Chock-a-block full of easy-to-use yet surprisingly powerful tools and techniques, this book will help you to break free from the shackles of depression, and build a life worth living.' Joe Oliver, founder of Contextual Consulting and co-author of Mindfulness and Acceptance Workbook for Self-Esteem 'Depression isn't just about feeling sad: it can rob us of motivation, patience, clarity and our sense of purpose. Those make it even harder to start turning things around. The Little Depression Workbook offers the perfect approach for this situation: brief as well as thorough, clear as well as evidence-based, purposeful as well as practical & about real change as well as understanding. It goes straight on my "recommended self-help books" list.' Dr Ray Owen, Consultant Clinical Psychologist, and author of Facing the Storm and Living with the Enemy 'The Little Depression Workbook will help you if you're feeling down, low or hopeless. It is jam-packed with so many practical exercises and relatable accessible cases to help you better understand your depression and the small changes you can make to live a life that feels a lot more fulfilling to you.' Aisling Leonard-Curtin, C.Psychol., Ps.S.I., Chartered Psychologist, co-director at Act Now Purposeful Living, Peer Reviewed ACT Trainer, and co-author of Number 1 Bestseller The Power of Small 'This engaging little book provides us with cutting-edge approaches to help those who struggle with depression. Dr Dayna Lee-Baggley, Registered Psychologist in the medical, surgery and cancer care unit at a tertiary level teaching hospital, Assistant Professor in the Faculty of Medicine at Dalhousie University, and author of Healthy Habits Suck 'Depression is a terrible experience to live through. Gradually, sometimes suddenly, life drains of meaning. The slightest commitment can feel like a mountain to climb. It can feel as if there's no end in sight and it can be hard to see that a meaningful life is still possible, yet it is. In fact, it's because a meaningful life matters so much that we can feel so empty when it loses meaning. This book will show you how to gradually rebuild a meaningful life through the well-validated ACT approach. You'll learn how to distance from your mind's gloomy stories, receive your pain with kindness and nurture, and through meaningful action, build a life worth living. Simple, engaging, effective. This book has all that you need to lift you from depression.' Benjamin Schoendorff, founder of the Contextual Psychology Institute in Montreal, and co-author of the Essential Guide to the ACT Matrix.

Most of what I know about myself, I have learned from playing Schumann.” (Jonathan Biss) World-famous pianist Jonathan Biss has had a special relationship with composer Robert Schumann since he was a child. Avoiding traditional biography and dense musical criticism, Biss writes a moving tribute to one of the most vulnerable composers in classical music history in his second Kindle Single: A Pianist Under the Influence. Biss's first Kindle Single, Beethoven's Shadow, has been a best seller on Amazon since its release, in December 2011. A Pianist Under the Influence reflects on Biss' lifelong, intense, multilayered relationship with the composer's music and historical treatment. As Biss writes from the unique position of performer, scholar, and fan, his work is both a personal and professional love letter to the 19th-century composer. An engaging listen for anyone interested in the creative process, it also includes a guide for listeners who wish to delve further into the material. A Pianist Under the Influence is an important aspect of Biss' 2012-2013 focus on Schumann, during which Biss and several hand-picked collaborators will perform Schumann's work; music by his notable influences such as Beethoven, Schubert, and Purcell; and selections from his long list of successors ranging from Berg and Jancek to 26-year-old composer Timothy Andres. At the core of the project is four sets of concerts, curated by Biss, including series at Wigmore Hall, the Concertgebouw, Carnegie Hall, and San Francisco Performances. But soon the attacking armies of Vandals, Goths and Persians grow to fear and respect the name of one man, Belisarius: horseman, archer, swordsman and military commander of genius. As Belisarius triumphs in battles from the East to North Africa, his success causes him to become regarded with increasing jealousy and suspicion. In his palace in Constantinople, the Emperor Justinian, dominated by his wife Theodora, plots the great general’s downfall. Written in the form of a biography by Belisarius’ manservant, this epic historical novel portrays him as a lone man of honour in a corrupt world. Robert von Ranke Graves (24 July 1895 – 7 December 1985) was an English poet and novelist, scholar, translator and writer of antiquity, specialising in Classical Greece and Rome. During his long life he produced more than 140 works. Graves's translations and innovative analysis and interpretations of the Greek myths, the memoir of his early life, Good-bye to all That, and his speculative study of poetic inspiration, The White Goddess, have never been out of print. Graves earned his living by writing popular historical novels, including I, Claudius (for which he was awarded the James Tait Black Memorial Prize), King Jesus, The Golden Fleece and Count Belisarius. The Germans gave it another name, now synonymous with mankind’s darkest hours. They called it Auschwitz. Forced to do hard labour, starved and savagely beaten, Arthur thought his life would end in Auschwitz. Determined to go down fighting, he sabotaged Nazi industrial work, risked his life to alleviate the suffering of the Jewish prisoners and aided a partisan group planning a mass breakout. Reviews in Religion and Theology Philosophy is for everyone! Briefly: 25 Great Philosophers from Plato to Sartre outlines the lives of 25 of the Great Philosophers from the western tradition, including Plato, Aristotle, Hobbes, Descartes, Locke, Hume, Kant, Mill, Russell and Sartre, and explores some of their key ideas - ideas which have had a major impact on the development of western thought and society. As well as highlighting contrasting approaches to philosophical questions, different treatments of particular issues, and areas where the thinking of one philosopher has influenced the ideas of others, this book reflects its authors' strongly-held belief that philosophy is for everyone, not only those who study it at university. Each chapter has a context section, which looks at those aspects of the philosopher's thinking that shed light on the key ideas; a short biography; discussion of the key ideas; an impact section summing up their influence; and suggestions for further reading, including internet resources. A glossary of philosophers and thinkers gives brief information about other philosophers and thinkers referred to in the book, while the glossary of terms briefly defines specialist philosophical and other terms. There is also an index. If you find this book's contents thought-provoking and horizon-expanding, do not stop here. Read some of these Great Philosophers' books. They wrote about the big issues of life. Exploring their ideas can help us to answer some of the questions we face today. At least, it can help us to understand the questions more clearly! Chromatin: Structure, Dynamics, Regulation

For everyone who is interested in chromatin organization and its role in gene regulation and who is willing address this topic in a quantitative manner, this book provides an excellent start. Ralf Blossey captures the complexity of chromatin biology in several well-chosen topics and builds physical models to explain a wide variety of recent experimental observations. And for those who want to go further, the book is larded with references that will guide you in right direction. - Prof. John van Noort, Biological and Soft Matter Physics, Leiden University, The Netherlands This book will prove to be extremely useful and motivating for any scientist, student or newcomer interested in the growing field of genomics and epigenetics. It illustrates the need for interdisciplinary approaches to tackle one of the main challenge in cell biology: understanding how chromatin is spatially and dynamically organized in the nucleus of eukaryotic cells and how this affects genome structure and function. This book clearly shows that when using concepts, methodologies, numerical and experimental techniques from statistical mechanics and nonlinear physics, one can shed a new light on the multi-scale and –time mechanisms involved in chromatin mediated regulation of nuclear functions, including transcription, replication, and repair. The main strength of the manuscript is the inclusion in each chapter of specific examples that are not only discussed but analytically and/or numerically treated. These examples give nice illustrations of how the different orders of packaging in the hierarchical organization of DNA in the nucleus of eukaryotic cells, from the nucleosomal structure to the chromatin fiber and chromatin loops, condition (i) the accessibility of DNA sequence elements to cis- and transacting factors controlling regulatory functions, and (ii) the epigenetic regulation of the genome via chromatin marks, histone tail modifications and chromatin remodelers. This book does not pretend to provide a comprehensive and synthetic view of a field which is quite dynamically alive but only emerging. It should be considered as providing an initial journey for readers with theoretical and computational background knowledge and expertise to the centre of the spatio-temporal complexity of the eukaryotic cell nucleus. -Alain Arneodo, Université de Bordeaux This book provides a comprehensive and interdisciplinary overview of chromatin structure and dynamics and how it relates to gene regulation. It should prove to be very useful both for biologist who wish to know more about the physics inside the nucleus and physicists who want to get involved in chromatin research. - Christophe Lavelle, Research scientist and co-head of the Nuclear Architecture and Dynamics network, National Center for Scientific Research, France. Chromatin: Structure, Dynamics, Regulation (the latest addition to the outstanding Chapman & Hall ‘Mathematical and Computational Biology’ series) is an unreservedly and highly recommended and core addition to professional, corporate, and academic library Contemporary Biology collections in general, and should be noted for the personal reading lists of students, academicians, genetics researchers, and non-specialist general readers with an interest in the subject that Chromatin: Structure, Dynamics, Regulation is also available in digital book format. - James A. Cox, The Midwest Book Review, September 2017 The book is written for a wide audience with various backgrounds (biology, chemistry, physics, biostatistics/bioinformatics). The concepts are introduced in detail, however the author relies on the readers on some background for this topic. The systematic style complemented by problems scattered throughout and extensive sets of references that conclude every chapter, recommend this book for novice and experience researchers alike, as a stepping-stone towards more in-depth research in this eld. - Irina Ioana Mohorianu (Oxford), Zentralblatt MATH 1400.92001

Some reviews of the SCM Briefly Series 'The painless way to become well read...Daniel shows himself to be a sure-footed guide, with an obvious gift for presenting complex ideas clearly and concisely.' Church Times 'This series provides a very useful and student-friendly stepping stone between secondary and primary texts...Apart from the obvious student market, many general readers will welcome such useful introductions to some of the great names of Christian history.' Journal of Education and Christian Belief 'The Briefly series aims to help students wrap their minds around original texts without sacrificing either the subtlety or completeness of the arguments therein.' Reviews in Religion and Theology Philosophy is for everyone! The authors The author of the Briefly series and SCM AS/A2 Ethics and Moral Philosophy, Dr David Mills Daniel, is an educational consultant and freelance lecturer, and a former head teacher and senior GCSE and A-level examiner. A graduate of the Universities of Cambridge and Yale, Dafydd E. Mills Daniel is a Marquand Scholar of Yale Divinity School, where he completed a Masters degree in philosophy of religion, and is currently researching for a DPhil at Oxford. A graduate and Scholar of Christ's College, Cambridge, Megan Daniel has degrees in theology and law and an MPhil in philosophy of religion from Cambridge University, and is a teacher of religious studies and law.
